What is Tajweed ?
Tajweed is an Arabic word which means to pronounce every letter and every word correctly from its correct makhraj (point of articulation), with all its characteristics as it was revealed to our beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
Tajweed helps us recite the Quran accurately and correctly. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ recited the Quran correctly and taught its recitation to his Companions, and the knowledge of Tajweed has been preserved and passed down through generations.
Why is tajweed so important in Quranic recitation?
Tajweed is very important because it helps us pronounce every letter and word of the Quran correctly. Without proper Tajweed, there is a greater chance of making pronunciation mistakes, and in some cases, a change in pronunciation can change the meaning of a word.
Let's take an example:
The word علیم(ʿAlīm) means “All-Knowing,” while أَلِيم (Alīm) means “painful.
As you can see, a small difference in pronunciation and vowel structure can completely change the meaning of the word.
This is why learning Tajweed is important for anyone who wants to improve their Quranic recitation and recite the words of Allah accurately.
Learning Tajweed helps us understand the correct pronunciation of Arabic letters, their Makharij, their characteristics, and the rules that should be followed during Quranic recitation.
