What is Makharij ?

Makharij is the plural of makhraj,which means the place from where the sound of Arabic letters is produced. There are 17 articulation points (Makharij) in Tajweed. These 17 Places of Articulation cover the entire vocal tract from the throat to the lips where Arabic letter sounds originate. If we don’t pronounce a letter from its correct Makhraj, we might change the meaning of the Quran. There are five main areas in our mouth and throat that produce the sounds of the Arabic letters which are:

1. Al-Jawf — The Oral Cavity
2. Al-Halq — The Throat
3. Al-Lisan — The Tongue
4. Ash-Shafatan — The Two Lips
5. Al-Khayshum — The Nasal Passage
